Noise Assessment of Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants
Abstract
Noise is a global environmental problem that should concern all governments. Noise pollution effect the life quality of human. Noise pollution continues to expand with an increasing number of complaints from people. Nowadays, people are usually exposed to more than one source of noise.
Several water and wastewater treatment plants have been constructed in Turkey in the last decades. However, a very limited number of studies were published on the noise pollution in the treatment plant. In this study, noise level of Sivas Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants were determined by using IKON72 model noise measurement instrument according to the environmental noise measurement and evaluation guidelines of Republic of Turkey Ministry of Environment and Urbanization. Results indicated that the noise level in the blower, generator, decanter, and chemical preparation units in the WWTP and tapered aeration, blower, grid removal, generator, and decanter in the DWTP exceeded the permissible limits of 85 dB. Loud noise at work can damage people’s hearing and lead to risks to safety. Working time limitation and uses of some hearing protectors might decrease the effects of noise on the workers.
